Treasuring Childhood Film & Lecture Series

Presented by Tucson Waldorf School

Tucson Waldorf School is pleased to present the second annual Treasuring Childhood Film & Lecture Series as an opportunity for adults to observe and discuss current issues challenging today’s children and families. Topics follow the trajectory of childhood development from birth through adolescence, including choices for mothers in their birth experience, the best ways to support critical brain development in the young child, the importance of play, the impact of excessive homework, & the overall impact of media on the developing child in our technology-filled world.

Admission is free – Reservations recommended. Adults only. Babes in arms are always welcome. All Treasuring Childhood events take place at Tucson Waldorf School’s River Bend campus at 3605 E. River Road. Call 520.325.5514 or send e-mail to RSVP.

Wednesday, February 13 | Lecture: Media Violence and Children – What do we know? What do we do?

Join us for this timely lecture from Dr. Ed Donnerstein, University of Arizona Professor of Communications, and internationally-recognized researcher in the areas of mass-media violence and mass-media policy. Dr. Donnerstein, author of 250 scientic articles, is past President of the International Society for Research on Aggression and has testified before the US Senate on TV violence. Learn about current research and discuss how as families and as a community we take action for a more peaceful future.

This program is intended for an adult audience; babes in arms are welcome.

Thursday, January 23 | Film: Race to Nowhere

The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture

Back by popular demand, this documentary provides an intimate view of the pressure on today’s students who lead lives packed with activities leaving little room for down-time. This film reveals the silent epidemic in the nation’s schools: cheating is commonplace, students are disengaged, and stress-related illness and depression are rampant. Young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Emmy Award winning documentary!
Loss of outdoor unstructured playtime affects mental and physical health as well as cognitive and social capacities. The film examines the creative magic that can arise when children are allowed and encouraged to play with abandon.

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 | Lecture: With the Brain in Mind

“Critical windows of opportunity in the early years of childhood.”

Current research on the developing brain has revealed four essential areas of development in the early years: emotional, sensory motor, auditory, and visual. Claudia Pfiffner, TWS Kindergarten faculty member, applies her 30 years of teaching experience and graduate work to give parents practical information based on current brain research.

Thursday, September 20, 2012 | Film: Freedom For Birth – The Mothers’ Revolution

This global premier documentary film is presented in partnership with the El Rio Birth & Women’s Health Center. The film makers bring awareness to an independent movement supporting freedom of choice in childbirth.
